Chen Yin-Ju interprets social power and history through cosmological systems. Utilising astrology, sacred geometries and alchemical symbols, she considers human behaviour, nationalism, imperialism, state violence, totalitarianism, utopian formations and collective thinking. Recently, she has been exploring the material effects of spiritual/ shamanic practices and the metaphysical potentialities of consciousness.
Transactions (2008) shows one example of how Asian parents devote themselves to their grown children. Here a mother works tirelessly for rich clients so she can send her daughter to study in the USA. The montage illustrates the detailed procedure of dressmaking, and the phone conversation covers credit card expenses, converted from US dollars to Taiwanese yuan. This work is part of “Cernuschi Video Art #3: Transmissions” at ASIA NOW 2019 in Paris.
