As cities everywhere adopt the formulas of art fairs and biennales in order to assemble international and local gallerists, artists, collectors and audience under one roof, more and more art markets, which were once unconnected, become interlinked with each other. This conversation between Tim Etchells and Emi Eu traces the development of the art market in Southeast Asia in relation to India, China and Euro-America in terms of infrastructures, models and identities, and speculates on the future of art fairs and art markets both regionally and internationally. They also look in detail at some key trends, developments and outlook for the Southeast Asian art market.
Tim Etchells is one of the major forces behind the development of art fairs in Asia-Pacific. He was a key organiser of ART HK, now Art Basel Hong Kong, he launched Sydney Contemporary and Art Central in Hong Kong, and is a key founder of Taipei Dangdai and the upcoming ART SG. Among other important roles she has held in the Singapore art scene, Emi Eu is a member of the Selection Committee for Art Basel Hong Kong, and has been the Executive Director of STPI since 2009. Since 2007, she has also been the Programme Director of Fondation d’enterprise Hermès Aloft in Singapore.
